Of all the soccer skills, communication is one thing that is imperative for both coaches and players to learn. A coach has to give instructions, share feedback, evaluate players, council them, maintain discipline, and all this requires communication skills.
Players, on the other hand, talk about issues with coaches, peers, parents, share feelings (good or bad) with colleagues, and give tips and tricks to new players in the team. It is the comprehensive language of soccer by which players and coaches transmit their thoughts and feelings.
Soccer coaching has some basic philosophies that the coaches must learn and consequently teach their players.
1.Always call your players using their names. This is both courteous as well as soothing.
2. Before instructing the players, understand what you want them to do and expected results.
3.Be empathetic: The goal of communication is to connect and not to defeat. So value the opinions of others as well.
4. Observe your body language: It should transmit positive vibrations and make the other person easy and open.
5.When addressing the team, maintain eye contact with each player one by one. Look into the eyes pf people that you get to talk to.
6. Your technique of speaking should make an impression on the person you are talking to. So adopt a style that not only defines you but also suits the other person.
7. Choose a topic that needs to be discussed. Communication answers many questions, how to coach soccer works only when it is straightforward and short. Select a list of items and that’s it.
8.Be objective: Just remember that as a coach, you are interacting with a team or an individual player. So keep your sentiments in control and talk to them only about the game.
9.Speak clearly: it is important that your intended message reaches the recipient as it is.
10.While teaching soccer, focus on the main points. The players should be reminded of the important points by repeating them in different ways.
11.Always aim to keep the conversation light by using funny words and style.
12.Always give your players enough room and confidence so that they can get their queries answered from you. Allow them to ask questions.
A soccer coach who does not exhibit good communication skills required to distribute the information correctly will not be a good coach in the long run.
